Death is the great equalizer

Death is the great equalizer

Not so long ago in a galaxy not so far away men boasted of being great, of being rich, of being powerful. These same men boasted of being smart, of being superior, of being better. These men, not unlike myself, had loving families and good jobs. These men though were somewhat lucky (though I don’t believe in luck). They were born at the right time, in the right family, in the right nation, and had been brought up in the right area. In their upbringing we’ll say that their parents raise them right, according to the world’s standards. Now they are living the American dream. They have anything material you could ask for, they have clean cut friends, they have a loving wife, two kids, a dog, and a truck.

However they have something else that they never paid attention to and they couldn’t make enough money to get rid of it. They have a sin debt. Though these men are, by the world’s standards, smarter, better looking, greater, more charismatic than 80-90% of the other men around them they are dying. Not only are they dying, they are dying without hope.

See, this thing we hate called death is coming. When it comes, it doesn’t only come for those poor, stupid, ugly people. (I say this tongue in cheek) It also comes violently to those rich, smart, good looking people on the cover of magazines. Those people we see on television death is coming for too. This thing called death doesn’t care how much money you have. It doesn’t care what you look like. It doesn’t care who your family members are. It doesn’t care who your friends are. It doesn’t even care how healthy you are. It’s coming. Nothing can be done to stop it. Nothing. Death will take everyone. Death is the great equalizer. Though you may live in fancy mansions or castles and someone else lives homeless on the street you will meet each other in the ground someday. You, and I, will both come face to face with this enemy of humankind. We all have a date with death.

However, within the Christian faith there is One who has defeated death. No other religion or person can claim this. Only One has went to the grave and rose victorious over it. This One, Jesus Christ, defeated death by not doing the very thing that kills us, by not partaking in the thing that brought about death to begin with. He never sinned. He perfectly obeyed God’s law, never sinning and only doing that which was right in God’s eyes. Only One can boast of this. He wasn’t the richest or best looking but He was God’s Perfect Man, the man Christ Jesus.

He not only didn’t sin but He laid down His life for sin or I should say for sinners, like myself. He died the most violent of deaths on a Roman cross for those that the Father gave Him before the foundation of the world. However if He simply lived and died, death would still not be defeated. He went to death for three days then took up His life again and in so doing has defeated death. Now He sits at God’s right hand and has said that if you believe (trust) in Him you will never die.

I will leave you with this, though this enemy called death is coming for us all, trust in Christ today and death will only being a door by which you walk into the glory of your King. For to live is Christ and to die is gain.

For His Glory!
